Best Water Bottle For Carbonated Drinks

Do you like to drink something fizzy once in a while? Yeah, me too. I just don’t like buying a single-use bottle each and every time. Thus, I rather have a soda maker. The problem is, sometimes I want to take my carbonated water on the go. Unfortunately, most reusable water bottles can’t really handle anything bubbly in them.

Soda In Bottles – How Does It Work?

Are you wondering why does your regular water bottle explode when you put a bubbly drink in it? The science behind it is simple. The carbonated liquid causes gas pressure to build up in the bottle. It likely makes the lid pop off. In unfortunate cases, the whole bottle kind of blows up. Not always funny.

Moreover, a regular water bottle that is not specifically made for soda can make your fizzy drink taste weird, or just go flat by the time you want to drink it. (If it doesn’t explode before that …)

Therefore, you need a water bottle that can handle the gas pressure for sure. Usually, it’s an insulated stainless steel bottle with a screw top lid that works. However, in my selection, you can find a featherlight, durable Tritan one too.

The insulation can keep the liquid in the bottle cold. It will help to keep in the bubbles too. An insulated water bottle can keep your drink cold – AND bubbly – for about a day.

Pro tip: Pour your carbonated beverage into a glass when you want to drink it and quickly close the lid on the water bottle! It can prevent the temperature from going warm and the bubbles from dying.

(A sports cap might seem like a good solution to this problem, but nope, a fizzy drink is not really enjoyable when you are sipping it through a small hole.)

If you are worried about the carbonated liquid having some chemical reaction with your water bottle, go for Tritan or stainless steel.

Wait, what, can you put carbonated drinks in a stainless steel bottle?

That’s usually the first question I get when discussing this topic. The answer is yes. You can put soda in a stainless steel water bottle if the manufacturer ensures their product can handle it. In fact, stainless steel and Tritan are both sturdy materials (stainless steel is one of the healthiest for water bottles, actually), and even the slightly acidic sparkling water will not harm them or make them corrode or erode.

Whatever anyone says, when choosing a water bottle for carbonated drinks, it’s very important to check for compatibility. Not all water bottles are designed to hold fizzy drinks, and using the wrong type of bottle can result in leaks, spills, and lost carbonation.

Therefore, always look for bottles that are specifically labeled as “carbonation-friendly” or “soda-friendly”. Try to avoid bottles with narrow openings or weak seals. They will probably not be able to handle the pressure of carbonation. Stainless steel and vacuum-insulated bottles are often good for keeping carbonated drinks bubbly and fresh.

The SodaStream solution: My Only Sports Bottle

As an available choice, I have to mention Soda Stream’s own bottle too. I’m not talking about SodaStream replacement bottles, but the one that is designed to be used on the go. To be completely honest, it doesn’t make my heart beat so much faster. It does its job alright, you can put home-made soda in it, but nothing fancy, if you ask me.

Conclusion

All in all, you can put sparkling water, sodas, or any kind of bubbly drink in reusable water bottles that are designed for the purpose. Always double-check on the manufacturer’s or the brand’s website if a specific product you like can handle carbonated drinks to avoid after-purchase surprises or disappointment.

Cheers!
